...very hard to explain. According to “The Ethics Guy” from Business Week ethics can be broken down into five easy principles.
The first principle is “do no harm”, what is meant by this is simply don’t make things worse. For example, if a co-worker is having a bad day and lashes out at you, you are most likely to want to lash back at them because “they had it coming”. According to the “do no harm” principle you should just let go because although that person may have mistreated you there is no reason for you to do the same to them.
The second principle is “make things better”, this is fairly self explanatory. It’s basically says to do things that may not directly benefit you but in turn will help others in some way. Although doing things strictly for yourself and for your own personal benefit is not illegal it may not be as fulfilling as doing something to help out others.
The third principle is “respect others”, again this principle is very self explanatory. Respecting others is crucial in any aspect of your life whether it be business related or simply a personal issue. Respecting others is as simple as protecting an individual’s confidentiality, always telling the truth, only making promises that you can keep, and always being trustworthy.
The fourth principle is “be fair”. Being fair is a huge part of every person’s life and can greatly affect how people view you. If a manager at work plays favorites with his/her employees they are very likely to be disliked and looked upon as a bad manager that practices unethical behavior by those that are on the wrong side of the “favorites” game. The same applies to everyday life outside of business it is simply not appropriate for somebody to treat a person differently just because they favor one person over the other.
