Giorgio Armani, one of the most recognized fashion designers has spoken about the rise in young women who are very skinny. He said that it would be better if the fashion industry did not use ’size zero’ models to stop the rise in eating disorders among young women. Coming from such a big fashion designer this will create a lot of people in the industry question if it is ethical for fashion agencies to let sickly skinny women model. Should there be a BMI (Body Mass Index) limit for every modeling Agency. Also, who’s to blame for the women’s eating disorders? The family, the media, or the fashion industry?
In September of 2006, the first banning of models from fashion shows that were too skinny took place in Madrid. This was the first big step in recognizing that the weight problems with models in the industry were a serious problem not only in Madrid but all over the world and that they were going to do something about it. Brazil and Italy are some of the other countries that have had problems with anorexic models and they have also taken steps to stop the increasing rate.
There are five approaches that we could use to analyze this situation. The five approaches are the utilitarian approach, rights approach, fairness and justice approach, common good approach, and the virtue approach.
If we were to use the utilitarian approach there would probably a weight limit for every model in America. Since utilitarian approach is greatest good for the greatest amount of people a BMI (Body Mass Index) on each model with be the safest situation for every model and every young girl.
