...into the country by different means of transportation. During this time the English society was in the process of converting from the old Pagan beliefs the newly introduced Christian beliefs. Paganism was left by the Scandinavians who had invaded England in the earlier part of England’s history. Christianity was brought into England by the Romans who invaded in 55 B.C. England remained part of the Roman Empire for about four centuries (Ruffel 8). By combining these two very different religions the poet was able to accentuate the principles of his era by enhancing the behavior of the Pagan and Christian lifestyles.
Christianity plays a very important role in Beowulf, for example Beowulf’s character is a kind-of Christ figure in the eyes of the Danish, because Beowulf came to save them from Grendal, much like Jesus came to save the Jews. Beowulf shows very strong courage and heroism throughout the epic, much of his bravery came from his faith in the lord. By believing in their faith, Jesus and Beowulf without knowing their fate continued their fight of good versus evil. (Anonymous)
Grendal was conceived by a pair of monsters born of Cain. The evil in Grendal was so great that he drove all the warriors’ away form Herot, and it was empty for 12 winters. Grendal couldn’t touch the King’s throne because it was protected by the powers of god. While Grendal was dominating Herot Hall King Hrothgar’s council turned to the devil because they thought that only the devil would be strong enough to defeat the wrath of the fires of Grendal’s hell. Beowulf was a man of extraordinary power, he had inhuman strength. It was by this power that Beowulf was able to defeat the wickedness of Grendal.
