Beliefs:
• Hindus believe body is made of natural elements. Food eaten contributes to personal and spiritual purity
• Believe in self control and a life cycle that impact indiv actions= place restrictions on foods. Avoid foods that could be harvested in a way that neg. impact ones karma.
• Hindus believe all living organisms are sacred / everything worthy of respect= why encourage vegetarianism. Job is to reduce suffering in world- don’t kill animals.
• Hinduism encourages being a vegetarian (most common) bc of respect for animals. Many are vegan and will not eat/use any animal products.
• Only certain sects choose to vegan/veg. Many choose not to be- eat fish, poultry, eggs and drink milk.
• No sect eats beef-cow is sacred. Cows/bulls are associated with many gods (Shiva/Kirshna) and have high ranking. Presence indicated main god Shiva. Shiva rides on back.
• Almost all sects do not eat pork- considered unclean can easily carry lethal bacteria.
• Proper diet is vital for spiritual growth
• Hindus believe for true service to God purity of food is necessary to maintain desirable state of mind that leads to enlightenment
• Food consumed to maintain mind and body equilibrium.
