All drivers should know what to do in the event of a vehicle breakdown. Although it is obviously not illegal, in itself, to have a breakdown, it must be remembered that the normal rules of the road in regard to parking and causing an obstruction must still be adhered to as far as possible.

PROCEDURE

1. As long as the vehicle can still be driven further in safety, it has not broken down and should
be parked in a normally permitted place or, at least, where it does not cause an obstruction.
2. The driver should try and establish what is wrong.
3. If the vehicle breaks down in a place where stopping is prohibited, or where it is causing an
obstruction, and must be left in order to obtain assistance, the police should be notified.
4. The police are empowered to remove any vehicle which is causing an obstruction or parked in
a restricted place.
5. The driver should contact his supervisor and provide full details so that arrangements can be
made to send out a tow-truck, or a mechanic, or make whatever arrangements are necessary in
the situation.
6. Make a note of the time, place, landmarks and any other necessary details so that you can
easily be located.

THE EMERGENCY WARNING SIGN

In the interest of road safety, at least one red reflective emergency warning triangle must be carried with every vehicle. These signs are to be displayed when the vehicle is stationery under certain hazardous conditions.

Heavy vehicles must use the new large triangles (length of sides 450mm minimum) carrying either the SABS or European  (E) or (e) stamp of approval.  As an alternative, bakkies and kombi-type vehicles are still permitted to use the old 300mm sign.
