We find that each of the characters, from Abigail to Reverend Hale to Marry Warren, having their ideals and their lives tested by the situations they find themselves in. One person’s escape from their tribulation leads to another’s misfortune, and so a chain of troubles is formed, drawing everyone inside. This vicious cycle throws everyone out of the frying pan and into the fire, and what seems to be an escape from their test only brings ruin down upon Salem.
Biography:
Arthur Miller Arthur Miller was born in Harlem on October 17, 1915, the son of Polish immigrants, Isidore and Augusta Miller. Miller’s father had established a successful clothing store upon coming to America, so the family enjoyed wealth; however, this prosperity ended with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Financial hardship compelled the Miller family to move to Brooklyn in 1929. Miller graduated from high school in New York in 1933. He applied to Cornell University and the University of Michigan, but both schools refused him admission. Miller worked a variety of odd jobs — including hosting a radio program — before the University of Michigan accepted him. At school, he studied journalism, became the night editor of the Michigan Daily, and began experimenting with theater.
Taking advantage of the publicity of Miller's marriage, House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) subpoenaed him to appear before the committee shortly before the nuptials. Before appearing, Miller asked the committee not to ask him to name names, to which the chairman agreed.
