Sub-Sahara Africa
ABSTRACT
The part of Africa south of the Sahara Desert, Sub-Saharan Africa, is one of the poorest regions in the world (Hill 2008). A combination of massive corruption, major health concerns such as AIDS, climate, and land policies have left this part of the world in total disarray (Yasin 2005). Some of the countries are fairing better than others. These countries interact with the rest of the world through economic policies (Yasin 2005). The entire region has tried to address many of the problems, but over half of the population lives in dismal poverty. Major change is required in the region to improve it. This will require both efforts of the population within the countries as well as policies in the rest of the world that will encourage economic development in the region.

Africa is known for being the “Cradle of mankind” (Hilton-Barber, Berger, and Hilton-Barber 2004). Africa, however, is the poorest and least urbanized of the world regions. Africa had a population of approximately 900,000,000 people in 2005, which accounts for 13.6 percent of the world total population (Asante and Mazama 2005). Africa has an area of 30,186,000 square kilometers (11,698,111 square miles), which represents about 20 percent of the total planetary surface (world total land is 149,961,000 square kilometers or 57,900,000 square miles).
