Indian tele density at 19.86% is very low compared to other nations. Its rural teledensity is about 2%. This presents an excellent opportunity for the telecom companies to expand their business and reap benefits. The entry of foreign giants like Vodafone into the market is a testimony for the attractiveness of Indian telecom sector.
In the initial stages, Indian telecom sector was a monopoly of the Department of Telecom. But with the government allowing private participation in the sector the growth has been phenomenal.

Cellular services were launched in India in 1999. From 10 million mobile connections in 2002, India now boasts of 200million mobile connections. As on August 2007, there were 241 million telephone connections, out of which there were 200 million mobile connections. India adds almost 8million mobile subscribers per month.



Reliance Communications
Reliance Communications is the flagship company of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. Established as Reliance Infocomm in 2002, it was a result of Dhirubahi Ambani vision of providing telecommunication services at the price of a post card. It entered the Indian telecommunications sector by adopting the new technology, CDMA. They captured the interest of the aspiring Indian population by providing mobile phones along with mobile connections at very low rates.
As of now the business of Reliance Communications is divided into different services, viz.
