COURSE DESCRIPTION

Strategic decision making entails thorough analysis of the organization and the external factors that impact the organization. These decisions are made in a complex environment of economic, social, political, and legal forces, all impacting the total enterprise. Understanding the cross-functional effects and consequences of situations, problems, or decisions and the long- and short-term implications for all areas of the organization is essential for strong and effective strategic decisions. A primary focus will be placed on analyzing the external, industry, and organizational environments that impact the operations and success of companies.

This course is intended give students a basis for analysis that they can carry with them to other courses and to their careers outside of the university setting.

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND COMPETENCIES

The objective of this course is to sharpen your ability to think strategically, to give you an appreciation of the importance of building a competitive advantage and sizing up a company’s strategic position, and to instill a sense of ethical principles and values into the strategic decision making process. The specific objectives of this course include:


1. Developing the skill and ability for identifying and analyzing complex management issues through the use of case studies and discussion of current events in today’s business environment.

2. Developing the skills to conduct a strategic analysis in a variety of businesses and industries. This also entails analyzing diverse competitive situations, including the challenges of an international and global market environment.
