Introduction.
The theme for this seminar was: “Transnational Migrants and Social Diversity in Globalising Singapore”. The guest speaker was Professor Brenda S.A. Yeoh from the
Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
I. Singapore
Singapore is a small city-state scarce in natural resources and is intensely part of global service capitalism since birth. Singapore has been open to immigrants from the start and is dependent on immigrants. What will immigrants bring to Singapore, good or bad? Only time can tell.
II. Economical Survival of Singapore
Immigrants are part and parcel of the economical survival of Singapore. Singapore has always been dependent on immigrants since the start of nation and will always be as we are short of local manpower.
A. Colonial Era
During the colonial era, liberal open-door policy on immigration drew large numbers of migrants from China, India Archipelago.
