1. Colonists longed to be considered British as the British believed that they were born with certain privilege and that anyone who was not British was basically “less than human”. The colonists would fight wars against the French (who utilized the help of the Indians) for the British. Yet fighting the wars was all for not. They were forced to give back all of the land that was won by a country that was not even there. On top of this, they were not even allowed the basic rights associated with the English Bill of Rights. Most of the reasons that the Colonists came to the Americas were to experience more freedom, which was not what they received at all.
2. After the British won the last war, The French-Indian or 7 Years War, the French had to give large part of the land in the Americas back to the British in the Treaty of Paris. So the Coast of the Americas was controlled mainly by the English. This victory made the colonists want to expand their wealth as they had wanted to do for quite some time. However the land that the British won back from France proved hard to govern as the Indians revolted, resulting in “Pontiacs War”, and the British realized that they must put restrictions in place. So, in the Proclamation of 1763, the ministry decided that the land west of the river near the Appalachians would be the boundary for the colonist’s settlement.
3. The debt incurred by the British having to place more troops and forts during the Seven Years War was immense. The cost to keep up the defense of the acquired land added to the cost to the British. So to pay for the cost, Britain’s Prime Minister, George Grenville decided that the colonists should have to pay the extra cost.
